I Love Swimming!

One of the best parts of being a lifeguard is simply being able to be in, near, or around the water ALL DAY!

Additional Lifeguard Certifications

One great way to work as a teenager is to teach swimming at your local pool or community center or gym. Water safety is very important, and with our Earth mostly covered by water helping people be comfortable in the water is critical. Getting a water safety certification is a great way to make this happen.

Water safety instructors can do more than just teach swimming, though that is typically the reason that people get certified. You can teach people about water safety, run mother daughter programs, and teach red cross certified classes.  You can do all sorts of different jobs at your local pool.  One day, when you're old enough, you could even head to lifeguard training to get you certification as a lifeguard!  Now wouldn't that be a great summer job to have!

Until then though, especially if you are still only 16 years old and not big or strong enough to be a lifeguard year, Instructors are trained to work with both children and adults, though most will work almost exclusively teaching kids. If the instructor wants to get hired as a lifeguard in the future, then they will definitely need to learn work with adults while in the water too.

Most pools, beach organizations, or gyms use a teaching curriculum purchased from the Red Cross in order to train individuals in the art of Water Safety. Individuals, however, can also purchase these training guides directly from the Red Cross if they want to learn what to do.  USA Swimming has some good information too.  However, you will still need to register for a class, as to become a certified Water Safety Instructor and be eligible to teach you must pass a class taught be a certified teacher. Must of the classroom instruction is actually done in the water, so that is why you cannot learn correctly at home or online. You can feel free to practice the test at home though and read the materials at your own convenience.

The basic requirements to become a instructor are age and ability based. Instructors must be at least 16, but do not necessarily need a valid drivers license. A birth certificate can be used to verify age and works just fine. The instructor must be able to swim laps using a variety of strokes, and may need to do so under a certain time limit. A proficient swimmer, with a little practice on the unique strokes, should be able to pass this exam without trouble.

Then, finally, you can go get that lifeguard certification you've always wanted!
